Default lifting FJ40

hi, i am looking into buying an old fj40 to play with. my question is can i just put lift blocks on the axles, and do some shackles(what is the maximum length that is safe to use) to sit it up off the ground. i want to get about 8 inches of lift all together. i was thinking i could build some 6 inch blocks. i haven't looked underneath them in a few years, adn i can't even remember how they look, would this combo work? i don't want to spend much money on it, but am interested in any kind of lifting technique for them. i figured this was the place that new these vehicles best. thanks in advance

Can't use blocks. Shackles will give you a small amount of lift.

I recommend a spring over conversion...

Go here and look towards the bottom of the links for pics on the spring over conversion I did on my 1967 FJ-40.

You can do a basic SPOA lift for around $50 if you can find someone to make you a new set of U-Joints and spring pads. Most any of your Fab-shops should be able to do this for you.
You'll also need to look into longer brake lines and possablly a different steering set up if you plan on doing it the safe way.
I'm running a SPUA with 3" lift Old Man Emu springs, but this set up runs around $1,200. But I'm easily clearing 33's and probably could even go as big as a 35" if I didn't mind rubbing a fender or two.
Hope this help. If you have any more questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Check out risingsun4x4club.org forums. The club's in Denver, CO and has been very helpful to me, I'm trying to figure out the best lift for my FJ40 too. Sounds like if you want that much lift, you should do a spring-over(SOA). Profitt's Cruiser's in Delta, CO has a great, affordable kit to do this: http://www.proffittscruisers.com/soa_kit.html
You have to know what you're doing pretty well though to do a safe and effective SOA, need some welding and such.
