Re: ROUGH IDLE Assuming that the cam timing is correct, that the compression is roughly equal on all cylinders after the rebuild, that the valves are adjusted properly, that the dwell is set correctly, and that the carb. is running the correct mixture, have you checked for the following: vacuum leak or mal-functioning distributor advance. Just fixed both problems on my newly purchased 77 FJ40 with big idle and top end improvement. I am going to be rebuilding my engine (bad rings in cylinders 4 & 5) and plan to follow the same formula that you did with the domed piston, RV cam, etc. How is the performance after your rebuild? What carb. are you using? My cruiser already had a Weber 32/36 carb that uses 3 adaptor plates. The adaptor bolts on all three levels were loose and I was loosing a lot of vacuum there. Good luck.
