Default ROUGH IDLE

Just rebuilt 2F engine in my '78 FJ40. Having a problem getting a good idle after the rebuild. The motor was bored with new domed pistons, head was cut and has an RV grind cam and headers. Seems to idle good with the timing way advanced, can't tell how much since it is out of the timing window. Does anyone know how far advanced you can run the timing with out damaging the motor? How do you get an accurate timing setting without a degree scale?

Please check that you have the distrubuter installed correctly. I have found
over the years that when you cant see the timing marks it is in off a tooth one way or another. I have a similarly equipted FJ-60 and the best vaccum i get is 15" of mercury

Good luck
John

Assuming that the cam timing is correct, that the compression is roughly equal on all cylinders after the rebuild, that the valves are adjusted properly, that the dwell is set correctly, and that the carb. is running the correct mixture, have you checked for the following: vacuum leak or mal-functioning distributor advance. Just fixed both problems on my newly purchased 77 FJ40 with big idle and top end improvement. I am going to be rebuilding my engine (bad rings in cylinders 4 & 5) and plan to follow the same formula that you did with the domed piston, RV cam, etc. How is the performance after your rebuild? What carb. are you using? My cruiser already had a Weber 32/36 carb that uses 3 adaptor plates. The adaptor bolts on all three levels were loose and I was loosing a lot of vacuum there. Good luck. Don.

Thanks for the replies. I ran all new vacuum tubing on the engine and checked for vacuum leaks. Doesn't seem to be any. I followed the vacuum diagram in a Toyota emmisions book I bought so I believe it is routed correctly. Diaphram on the distributor is working with no leaks. Also dialed the carb in. I am beginning to believe that with the increased compression and cam specs I am going to need to run more the the 7 deg. factory setting. How much is too much though? I can advance it quite far without hearing any ping. I am running 93 octane fuel in it. Any thoughts?????
