Default a few more Cruiser Questions

ok.
1. What is the cheapest lift kit or stock replacement kit for my 77 FJ-40?( It needs new springs all around, i don't want anything more than 2"s or so.)

2. What is this in my glove box? is that an outlet i see? it says in the haynes that it is a inspection light plug or something...what is it?? is there an inverter or something there? is it a 12v source?

3. there is a problem with the steering. this thing is a can of worms when i get it up to speed. how do i go about trouble shooting the steering system? any notorious problems i can look into first?

4. Does anyone make a carpet for the FJ? i need to do some insulating before winter... rust holes equal= chattering teeth

5. I am looking for the following parts: driver's side seat bracket, rear seats(or just frames) ,a knob for the 4wheel drive stick, and one stock spare rim.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

find a set of add a leafs.

its a 12v outlet for a emergency light that came with the truck, don't ask me why they used an outlet as a plug.

on mine the worst thing was bias ply tires, go with radials. Otherwise check where the play is and reference a repair manual, cruisers are known for bad steering. the best fix is a saginaw powersteering conversion.

4. Does anyone make a carpet for the FJ? i need to do some insulating before winter... rust holes equal= chattering teeth

make your own or try man-a-fre. i bought a carpet set and wasn't impressed with how complete it was. it was just lay in pieces which i could have done myself.

5. I am looking for the following parts: driver's side seat bracket, rear seats(or just frames) ,a knob for the 4wheel drive stick, and one stock spare rim.

sorry.

Specter Off-road has everything you need. (www.sor.com, I think) I have extra rear seats and stock wheels, but I'm in Wisconsin, where are you located?

Hey Waylon, The Spector H.D spring are probably the way to go(as Durtcheap stated)if you are just looking for 2" of lift or so. You have to purchase the springs separately $95 Front/$95 Rear. You also have to purchase the bushings and U-bolts separately as well. I would tend to stay away from add-a-leafs. They are cheap, but the ride quality will jar the fillings out of your teeth. If you use extended shackles, make sure you also purchase degree shims to rotate your front axle housing back to its origional location. Spector has the front cage to mate up w/your stock rollbar (actually just a sport bar) If your looking for real roll-over protection, I would seriously consider a real roll cage either mounted to the frame or to the body using un-equal size mounting plates. But if you want just the full cage look for less than half the cost of a real cage, Spector has that. Good Luck.

i have a set of taillights from my 72 FJ40 that are in ok shape as I think I'm going to use LED's. I also have a PTO winch complete that I may not be able to use with my diesel conversion for lack of space. The minimun for the winch is $500.00 plus shipping if I can't use it. Thhe other advice on add a leafs is good. Just remember the saying "you get what you pay for!" If you want the best it is going to cost. Most aftermarket springs especially the cheap ones are going to give you a rougher ride. The best way around that is to do a springover conversion. You really need to know what you are doing, it is involved and it needs to be done right. If you get bitten by the Cruiser bug like most owners then it's in your future so never get rid of the old springs as you need them do do this conversion.

Kurt

4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers has a Smittybuilt weld-in cage for like $85(I think). That's where I got mine the first time. It didn't fare to well in my most recent rollover, but held up pretty well for the previous dozen or so. From the sound of your application I'm sure it would do fine. I'm not sure about the price difference between 4WPH and Man-A-Fre or Spectre or whoever, usually 4WPH is cheaper.
