Default How to patch an exhaust pipe?

I've got a 88.5 'Zuki with a cobbled up exhaust system. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the vehicle so I don't want to buy a complete system yet.The problem is that some one removed the cat and tried to butt weld two same-sized pieces of pipe together. They did a lousy job and while the weld seems strong enough, there are a couple of holes where they burned through the metal. I need to stop the leakage, at least temporarily, but don't have access to a welder or a shop that's willing to work on an (illegally) altered system.

Years ago I bought a kit somewhere that consisted of a metal mesh "strip" to wrap around the pipe and a high temp patching compound of some kind to cover the strip with. It worked very well but I can't find a similar kit now.

Any suggestions/tips/advice will be appreciated.

TIA,

Mel

Your auto parts store should have an exhaust paste. The muffler fix kits won't work..

You need the paste/gasket maker (not rtv, it's exhaust gasket maker, gets REAL HARD). Use some of that with some steel screen and a hose clamp?

A harbor freigt welder is ~~ 120 dollars (mig..).
