Default shims newbie needs some education

Installing a yes trailmaster 3" spring under axle lift next week with 1" shackles if the darn kit gets here. Kit includes springs, shocks and pitman with new poly bushings. $600. including freight just couldn't beat the deal based on where I live.
Anyway I see plenty of posts regarding shims and I am absolutley cluesless about the discussion.

What are they, why do or don't I need them and since its over my head who can do this kind of work (tire shop?)

90 Samurai 30x9.5's and yeah they rub daily driver 2" freeflow exhaust and thanks to this board saved again by the discusiion oil and water pumps were both about to die any day. One fat shop bill and a big sigh of relief.

(No offense to any muslims on the board)

The shims in the discussion(s) are castoring shims. they go between the spirng and the axle to correct
(if needed) the castor. You don't need a shop to do this for you. Find a level place to park and if you
have a protractor level use it to check the the axle id tilted back at the top 3-4 degrees.

If you don't have a protractor, dont dispair, here's an old racing trick. Use a torpedo level and
measureing across a point 4" from the contact point. set it to 1/4". 1/4" across 4" is 4 deg.

If you do have to use shims, try to stick with steel ones . The aluminum ones have a tendency to break . Also, that lift rides like crap , you could've gotten a lot better parts and done a spoa , or even spua with better parts .

Default lift rides like crapt

Wish I could have but welding is not an option and the entire package had to cost under $600. and needed to be complete. Tried many zuk shops RRO, TT and others everything is on the west coast and I am in Wisconsin UPS charges ran in excess of $200. on just about everyones packages. No time for that fab stuff this is my ride to work every day and she can't be down for more than a day. The most offroad she'll probually ever see is my front yard
when she's getting washed!

Sorry just a samurai poser!

Too bad because I build YJ kits and sell them for $460 Canadian funds, which includes shipping to anywhere in the US or Canada. All you would have had to do was buy the nuts and bolts and a set of used rear YJ springs. Which can be had cheap. And running it spring under, you could have got a few inches of lift. I ran BDS in the past and it was pretty harsh. I didn't mind but I know a lot of others did and said the Trailmaster's were worse. Then again, you may love them!
Drop some pics here when the lift is done

Cheers,
Steve
