Default Rust

Ive got alot of rust comming up around my fender flares. Ive heard about some rust stopping compounds that I could use, but I was wondering if any of you have had this problem and what you did about it. Its not too bad yet, but it will be in a year or so.
Thanks,

Default Re: Rust

UGGHH! RUST!

If you can already see it with the flares on, your fenders thenselves are shot. My '94 had steel flares and I started to see a little rust on the drivers side near the top of the well. After I removed the flares(which were rusted on) I found that I had rot completely around the wheel well. The passengers side was almost as bad.

My suggestion is use a spot weld drill bit and remove all the steel lips that hold on the flares and cheezy plastic rocker flares. All these do is collect road salt and cause cancer (rust). Use POR-15 or another rust converter on any part that can't be replaced.

I replaced the drivers fender and patched and repaired the passengers side (will replace soon). I've replaced the stock flares with wider ones from Rocky Road Outfitters (Glenn). They are very well made of rust-proof fiberglass and cover my bigger sneakers. Plus, they make the Sami look phat.

I live in the rust belt (New York) and I think the greatest threat to the Samurai comes from road salt. You can watch your rig vanish before your eyes.
