My Turn

Select Toyota Axles
Pro: Due the weight of a Samurai as compared to a Toyota Hilux Pickup the axles
should last a long time. When it comes to R&P choices and lockers, several
vendors have parts to choose from. Although they were soly sold in the US from
79-85 Central/South america had solid axles in the late 1990's.

Cons: Rear drive shaft angle and vibrations

Jeep Axles
At one time Jeep had an axle setup offset just like the samurai and Fj40. It
came in a CJ5 with a 3 speed and t19, also a CJ7 Quadratrac. I hear that
the axles fail often.

They're around $150.<<<

Ouch, the cost of an entire Toy axle assembly.

Here's a little science for everyone to ponder. Go to http://www.moserengineering.com/mose...r/axletech.htm . Enter 74 for the torque (stock 1.3), 3.63 for your first gear ratio, and then multiply your ring and pinion by your t-case low (mine was 5.29 x 4.89) and input it into the last box. This calculates how much torque your engine will be able to put thru your driveline. Now look over to the right and see what their custom alloy shafts can take, keeping in mind stock axles will be weaker (I'd guess 20-30% weaker). The ideal situation is to have one axle capable of withstanding the entire load, that'll be pretty close to bulletproof. Keep in mind stock front is 22 spline, stock rear 26, Sidekick is 26 spline and Dana 44/Toy are 30 spline.

Okay, now I have a Samurai with yota axles, and a V6, with Yj springs all around! Does that make it non suzuki? In my mind it doesn't! It still has the samurai frame and body, and t-case! Zooky has a good point about the yota axles being made by the Asin Co. The same as the Suzuki! So, what is so wrong about using them? The Yjs are J**P's but for you guys with lifted springs like OME or Nationals, that is non-suzuki! Your tires, and wheels..I can go on and on! But this is going to get all of us nowhere! We all have Suzuki's, and we all love them! STOP being so damn nit-picky!

>>Some of us are in to Samurais because they are Samurais and we try to keep them that way as much as possible. I have too much inspiration from people like Tim Lund

Last time I checked, Tim Lund was running dual Toyota t-cases.

If you want to keep your Samurai "pure" just do a spring-over, add lockers & 4.16 gear + 31's & go have fun. If you want to go farther, don't whine about breaking factory parts or Waste Time debating whether somebody should upgrade or not.

Tim Hardy's silver rig was one of the top 10 trucks a while back. He hasnt used it in a looooong time. If he can do that and trail that little trailer with a bone stock engine, transmission and some gears, thats what I admire, and thats what I am referring to. I have known him since around '96.

I guess you are kind of missing the point Doug. In my opinion, if its a custom made part for any vehicle, that makes it just for that vehicle. Like I said before, those t-case arms you buy that are completely new units are 100% Suzuki, arent they? Just because Spidertrax or RRO made it, doesnt mean its not a Suzuki part. It will only fit/work on your Samurai, I guess that makes it a Samurai part. Same goes for Spidertrax's vehicles. They use custom made suspensions(like my 1/4 eliptic suspension from them)that are made for the Samurai ONLY. The axles they have are hybrids of custom parts they made and genuine Suzuki parts. Doesnt that make it Suzuki? It does in my book. As far as the Weber goes, it came with as a kit to fit my Suzuki. :P And I never said the suspension was something you could keep stock. In fact, just the oposite. There isnt a hardcore guy out there with stock suspension parts. sheesh Its weird how people pick out just parts they want to slam and miss the next sentence which explains it.

Well, last I heard from Tim, which has been a while, he had dual Samurai cases! Thats what he had told me. And if you didnt catch it, I said that I get too much "inspiration" from people like that. What someone does in the past can be your inspiration for the now. Make sense? And I wasnt debating whether or not someone should upgrade or NOT. It was more a discussion of HOW you upgrade. Reguardless of what anyone thinks on the subject I am going to use either custom or Suzuki parts for as long as I can. If some day I could afford the big-suzana or Spidertrax axles, I would do that! And even if they do have Dana 44 shafts in them. Try to read the whole message and not pick out a sentence or 2, you will miss the point. I am allowed to have my opinion on guys who rip out the frame, and ENTIRE drivetrain. No matter what vehicle you are into, there is a group of people that just dont get into that. I am one of them.

Well then by your own definition anything you can make to bolt to a suzuki is suzuki. So then my Former toy axles will be suzuki once they are on. Cool Huh?
