Jeeper with a Subaru here and was wondering if y'all could help. Recently my 1993 Subaru Loyale with the 1.8 non turbo threw the timing belt(s) at about 60 to 70 mph. I'm pretty sure this is what it is as the rotor will not turn when you crank the engine. Now I wasn't in the car nor do I even get to drive it but, lucky me, I get to work on it. My question is do I even need to bother replacing the belts or is the engine toast - you know, bent valves and stuff. BTW, it has 183,000 miles and was still going strong.
I'm trying to decide what to do. I'm tired of the car and want to sink it in my back pond but I hate to give up when it could be a $30 fix.
its all good, but relace both belts and all of the idler and tentioner stuff, and get a book, put one belt on then turn the engine over 180 degrees and put the other one on , tiis engine is a non interfefance engine, so its ok, it aint broke too bad
Yet another Jeeper on the Subaru board. Whats this world coming to?
Thanks for the input. I've been noticing the 1.8 is a very resilient engine and suprisingly easy to work on. Was just wanting another opinion before I started.
I'm currently working on a couuple of lawnmowers. Think I could use the same parts?
When you say turn the engine over 180 degrees, what are you talking about? According the Haynes, you align the cam dots with the notches on the covers (straight up and down), set #1 (flywheel marks at 0) at tdc and put your belts on. I did it like this. The reason I'm asking is beacuse I'm getting fuel, fire and air and the car wont crank. I'm figuring it has to be a timing issue since everything else checks out.
All pistons hit TDC when they are supposed to and the plugs fire when the piston is at TDC so I don't know what I did on this dang car.

Do a compression check. Just because the pistons are at TDC in relation to the distributor, doesn't mean they are in relation to the valves.
If you have compression - pretty good odds you have the belts on right and need to look for other issues. If no compression - recheck the belt install.
Well it's going again. Cost me 200 againt my better judgement. I was going to drag it to the scrap yard but the misses wanted to try one more time. It was the timing but I have no idea what I did wrong. Anyway, thanks for y'alls help. Now for a headlight, side marker, and A/C belt tensioner pulley. It just never ends with this car.
