Default timing belt woes

I recently broke my driver side timing belt, and then tried to fix it. my chiltons was wrong and told me to point both mards up, apparently one goes down and one goes up. i think i fixed that, but when i was trying to find out what was wrong i pulled out my distributor. i cant start it now, even though everything appears to be ok. its a 85 1.8 gl. has anyone ever bent valves even though this is a non interference motor? oh yeah, everybody tells me im 180 off, but it all looks right to me

Default Re: timing belt woes

My d/s belt broke a few months back, and I had to replace it. Both my Haynes and Chiltons manual said to point them straight up. But if you read it right, it'll say to put on the d/s belt, then rotate the crank 360 degrees and install the p/s belt. If you do this, the d/s points down and the p/s points up.

Not sure about the distributor, as I never pulled mine out. Do you have spark? Pull a wire and check. Also, make sure it's timed correctly and that you fixed the problems with aligning the belts/pulleys. Did you line up the marks on the flywheel correctly when you setup the pulleys?
