radio shack cars and trucks are garbage. they are cheap plastic toys. the chassis of the traxxas rustler is made of fiberous material and very durable. the rustler costs maybe 40.00 more then the radio shack but you get a great value from the rustler or stampede, (both very similar) the radio shack is a poor value, its top dollar your paying for what you get.

It all depends on what you want to do.. For racing off-road I'd get a competative truck out of the box. Team Associated RC10T4 RTR is a excellent choice for racing. Me personally I like building my truck so I would choose a kit instead of a RTR (Ready To Rebuild). I've been in R/C for quite some time though so I'm way past the beginning stages.

For a on-road car such as a "sedan" or Touring Car I'd probably take a look at the Associated, Losi or HPI options.

For a 2wd basher you can bash around the yard or campsite I'd probably look at the Stampede or Tamiya Blackfoot.

For 4wd truck I picked up a Tamiya Twin Detonator and it seems to be a pretty fun truck, and its pretty durable too. I've got mine sealed up for Winter use and I've driven it in quite a bit of white stuff.

If you really want a Formula One indy car Tamiya still makes them and in the Indy hayday they were one of the top brands producing them. I remember parking lot racing a Tamiya Benneton B192 car (I don't remember what chassis designation it was) back in the 90's before the sedan craze hit.

One brand I would recommend avoiding is Kyosho. I've given them a few chances with varios kits. I only have good memories of my first one though (Big Boss truck) because I was too inexperienced to know better, plus it was huge compared to what I was used to playing with.

oh my god whoever is talking about buying rc products from radio shack souldn't be posting in the rc section. once radioshack cars break they're broke! you guys need to buy an rc car magazine, xtreme rc or any of the others. go to www.hpiracing.com, www.ofna.com, you also have duratrax, tamia, www.teamlosi.com, team associated, thunder tiger, and schumacher.

stay away from radio shack and traxxas they both break easily the only difference is traxxas conveniently has plenty of replacement parts to fatten their corporate wallets, and if you doubt me just go to the track and tell me that isn't a t-maxx graveyard.

if anyone has any questions about good starter kits or any work that needs to be done on your cars just ask. i'll get you any answer you need. as far as buying a starter car, buy a new one because with the experience i have i wouldn't buy anything used without a complete teardown and inspection

my 11 year old son just saved up 200 and bought the stampede. he's had over a dozen 20 - 40 dollar radio shack, wall mart, toy's r us etc, that only last about a week. he did strip a gear in the trans driving it hard. the new gear was $3 or $12 for aluminum. we are going to try adjusting the slipper clutch to reduce shock load and put the controller in beginer mode to save parts. in the early 80's i bought my only "real" r/c. 4wd Mugen i think. it was about 150 bucks then and needed to be assembled as well. his stampede is way better of a car and every part seems to be available in stock or hd models.
