If you're meaning in mud racing, there generally is NOT a 2wd class, although some groups do allow them to run. We generally do not allow 2wd's in events in Missouri - historically, most 2wd's that have shown up have been stock pickups or dune buggies that just don't go anywhere & really make the show drag on. They usually have a hard time even approaching the starting line.

TEX, if there was a dedicated 2wd class, would it matter which wheels were the drivewheels? Just unhook the rear driveshaft, and you've still technically got 2wd, plus you'd have the more useful wheels doing the pulling... Actually, most 4x4's do remarkably bad with just the fronts pulling. Most can't make it up trailer ramps that way, but the same trucks can go up with the hubs unlocked. And for high-HP machines, the weight of the vehicle will transfer to the rear when you nail the throttle.

Hmmm.. I wouldn't have guessed that... I'd have guessed that the end with the most weight over it would do the most for you...

We stick the two wheel jobs in mod, because there is no place for them and they do not do well like Tex said. Most that we have seen were them VW buggy things, also have seen a couple of guys try stock cars and two wheel drive off road racers. One guy tried his 4x4 off road racer a couple of times,he had a whole lot of motor, 540 or something Ford, but with the weight and tires didn't fair very well either.
Tex is right on the rear wheels doing better then the front also. I have had guys with the NMRO tell me they would go faster with two wheel drive, rear, but since it is a four wheel drive class. The front tires don't touch much mud in them high power rails anyhow.
A few years ago we had a guy race steady with a VW rabbit, swampers I think on the front, he would rev the heck out of it, dump the clutch, clutch smoke like crazy and go. He was not fast, but normally could make a drag style track. Looked like a dog dragging it's butt across the lawn to me. But the guy had alot of fun and that is what it's all about.
