| | | Unimog reach 80 mph?
New to Unimog but thinking of getting one instead of the F550....
Is there a Unimog than can go around 80mph comfortably on road? I travel very long distances on road in my expeditions.
Thanks
A.B.

Well that depends on which one you are talking about. The older ones, NO, they would be capable or 55-maybe60mph. The NEW ones I believe MIGHT be able to. I know it will be a while for the new one to come out, and I expect 100K+ price for it. I have seen the prototype at the SAE tradeshow in Portland Oregon, and it is really badass, If i had the coin I would definately buy one.

in the 404 Unimogs - no, although an M130 engine conversion w/ turbo might get you up to 75mph or so, it'd be at ballistic rpms.
starting with the U1100 series ( 406/416's), there was a 'high speed' gearset available for use in firefighting rigs, etc. no idea of cost, or availability, but they do exist - I think top speed on a 5.7 diesel w/ high speed gearset was ~85, or 90 mph.
for details on the high speed box, try the 'Unimog forever' website - he has the complete drivetrain ratios for the 404, 406, and 416 models available on his site, including the granny, and crawler cascade boxes for each model.
