Default 10,000 Acre Solar at Big Dune, Amargosa Valley

According to Greg Helseth, renewable energy guy for Nevada BLM, a Notice of Intent will be out in two weeks to prepare an EIS for Pacific Electric to construct a 10,000 acre photovoltaic solar energy system north and west of Big Dune in the Amargosa Valley, Nevada. It would surround Big Dune with 16 miles of solar panels. It would probably cut off a lot of access. He said it will be officially announced in two weeks. Pacific Electric intends to plant trees around the whole complex to prevent blowing sand from sandblasting the solar panels! No kidding! (No word on how the trees would be watered.)

Funny how the greens want to save the whole planet from global warming but have no problem digging up 16 square miles to do it.

I'm not totally opposed to Solar Panels - they don't necessarily mean huge fenced off areas. If people are reasonable and not complete cactus-huggers.

There's a mountain range west of Armagosa - how CLOSE to the big dune are they talking?

Best in the Desert runs several of their events across that part of Nevada also. They'd have to hop across the fwy to get on the East side sooner than they sometimes do. Make their permit process tougher?

BLM - that means that's where your race fees are going when BITD has to buy BLM permit to run on their land. Where do funds go that are generated from selling power?

Interesting.
