Default New Jeep owner looking for some help

I recently purchased a 1992 Jeep Wrangler. She's in good shape with 84k miles. She drives tight (transmission is very sound) and everything is going smoothly....except...

When I have been driving, especially in the higher end of my gears (while going 70 on the expressway, at the top of second, etc) the oil pressure gauge has been peaking out. It's been traveling past 80 and possible up to the unmarked 100. However, when at idle (most of the time) it drops down to or below 40. Has anyone else seen this problem or knows how I can fix it? Any help would be appreciated...especially soon. I really don't wanna blow up my new Jeep

Thanx in advance

Suggest you repost to the Short Wheelbase board, this is the Jeepster Commando board.

High oil pressure like that will wash the bearings right out, requiring major work.
There is always an oil pressure relief valve, sometimes in the oil pump, sometimes in the oil filter itself.
The oil may be super dirty, or was before you bought it - the previous owner may not have changed the oil much..
Before driving it anymore, try changing the oil and filter - use a quality filter, not a cheapie.

Sorry guys, this is a Jeepster board, for our antiques, but this guy may be heading for trouble, I couldn't resist --- 4 lashes and a keel haul.
Rich

I agree with you RRich, my 4cyl. Wrangler only runs around 60 psi of oil pressure but idles around 40psi. His other problem could be
a faulty sending unit. The most problems I have had out of my Wrangler are sensors going bad after a day in the woods, that is why I am building my Jeepster so I can do away with all the electronics. I guess that means 40 lashes for me also.
