idle speed

225/auto what should the idle speed be? If I put it at 500 rpm per the book and put it in gear it dies. If I put it at 800 rpm and put it in gear it dies what now. Any input would help.

If your plugs, points, dwell and timing are all good, then I'd say the carb needs attention.
