Default back up switch / Shifter

Guys, first...thanks,great forum and great advice. I've been using the information here for my frame off rebuild (which has turned into a 4 year process). I havent posted since the frame stages and owe you some updates photos.

I have 71 hurst, auto...I thought the reverse lights were controlled with the neutral safety switch but as I started my shifter rebuild, I found a baggie with a button switch labeled back up switch? The manual shows a switch for on the clock / console harness for the Hydromatic, 3.319 - ?. Looks like either a 1 or 7? For the life of me, I cant find a thread addressing this switch for an auto and the manual's Group 7 shifter diagram doesnt show a switch? Does the Hurst dual gate shifter require both a neutral and back up switch?

Can't help you on the Dual-Gate shifter, but here's what a '71 non-Hurst w/automatic should look like with stock switch.

Thx Tim. Looks like the neutral switch on your shifter controls the back up lights also with no additional switch.

Am I right that the two light purple wires go to the starter solenoid and S terminal on the ignition switch? The two white wires to the backup light circuit in rear harness and accessory terminal on the ignition switch?

BTW, here is the neutral safety switch set up on the dual gate shifter.

Yes, the one switch controls both neutral safety and reverse lights.

Correct.

That sounds about right, but we used a Painless harness on that rig and I believe those wires were light green. That was back in 2003, so I'm fuzzy on exact details and this rig now has a B&M Megashifter as does my rig for the 4L60E automatics we are running.

Boy, I can't make heads or tails outta that, but then I'm not the sharpest pencil.
