Default Rear end noise and need to get something else on my mind

Had to put my oldest Lab down tonight, need to get my mind off the loss of my best friend. He was only seven.

Rear end on Jeepster makes periodic thunk/clang when accelerating (or however you spell "stepping on the gas"). Put her up on jacks and in park twisted the wheels. Right side does not budge much, the left rotates 3-5 degrees of play, perhaps the cause of thunk/clang. Ideas? Ring/pinion? Somewhat good with wrenches but haven't delat with gears beofre so bye gentle. She's a Deluxe Convertible so I'm ok just fixing rather than replacing with 44. We're about to start a frame off so trying to stay original...God that dog loved to sit in the passenger seat with his nosed pressed against the window. I'll miss him. The resto is now in his honor.

Thanks for any help.

Sorry to hear about your Lab, they are particularly loyal companions.
If your Jeepster has some sort of locker in the rear, that noise may be normal. Best to pull the cover and see if there are any chunks in there.

Could be several things. Start simple with checking all the nuts and bolts. Spring clamps, shocks, muffler bearings, etc. A imited slip diff. with the wrong lube may be the culprit...does sound like a locker, though. Easy to pop the cover and sift through the grease. I have mag. plugs in mine to catch the little stuff. Let us know what you find. GL.
About the Lab. I've had 13 labs in my life and 2 Chessies. I really DO feel your pain.
