Default NDTs?

I went to a military vehicle meet at the XXX Drive-In last weekend. Some very cool machines were there. Since then I've been considering putting military style wheels and NDT tires on the Jeepster. She never goes off-road so it'll be purely cosmetic. I'm thinking the 16 X 7" wheels would look just about right. Has anyone tried this? Any advice, warnings or photos?

Yeah, I'm bored.

The US style NDT works great, on dry pavement. The NATO NDT is similar in style, with grooves cut into it. Works much better all around than the standard NDT.

Lone Buggin is right. Drive NDTs at highway speeds in the rain and you'll soon see why they're not very common. But they're great in mud.

Thanks for the replies so far. Not exactly what I wanted to hear but it echoes what I've heard elsewhere. Considering the climate in Seattle it looks like I might be better off with a tire that doesn't have a slick treadless strip in the center.

If anyone has photos or experience with skinny military style tires on a jeepster... post 'em!

Meanwhile I'll focus on something along these lines:

Not exactly a military tire, but I use these pizza cutters on the front end of my baja bug. With a full tank (16 gal.) I air down to ~5psi w/o any issues at all. Then again, the only real weight in the front of a bug is the gas tank.

No noticeable road noise.. not that you would hear any tire noise when you have a 200hp air cooled monster yelling at you through dual cannons. As for handling the nasty stuff, even at 50mph through a foot of snow and slush, they respond just fine. Link in pic.

Default I Friggin' Love Pizza Cutters

hey, the ones with the interlocking chevrons will have less road noise, unless you want that authentic howl too. and yeah, any of the other suggestions will do better all around that the "tonka" tires. now all you need is a 20' antenna!
