Default Running rough at certain RPM?

Hey guys, I finally got her out of the garage after 10 months of trying to find time and money to fix the tranny. The junkyard SM420 is working very well and next time I think the junkyard will be my first stop, no rebuild just an R&R.

Anyways in that time I rebuilt the carb because an improperly installed filter allowed many small particles (about a tablespoon full) into the carb and was all sitting in the float bowl. Started it up and adjusted the idle by ear. At RPM of about 1700 and again at 2600 it surges/doesn't run smoothly. I plan to do the propane trick but I wanted to know where else to look if there are other possible problems.

Let me know if you need more information to help me.

Thanks guys!

Well I did the propane trick, super easy and very helpful THANKS RICH!
And of course the propane found no vaccum leaks and it even showed me that my rough idle was well adjusted (per Rich's directions/explaination). So following the advise of a mechanic friend, he asked if it was doing this before I rebuilt the carb. I said no and that I had not changed anything else on the engine either. He told me to start with what I have changed or messed with first.

So I disassembled the carb on the engine to save time (but not save my back!). I found that one of the main well tubes that the venturie assembly plugs into was slightly turned. Which means that the tube was not seated properly (turned a bit). I actually thought that I had moved this during dissasembly and thought nothing of it, just corrected it and put it back together. After thinking I had done all this for not . . . she runs like a champ and used the propane to double check my idle again.
Thanks Rich!

You mean the brass tube under the cluster that hangs down in one of the main wells? -- Emulsion tube.

Turned wrong it may have been foaming too much in there at that speed, or if the top was sticking up slightly, the cluster didn't seal properly.

Good detective work!

I'm surprised propane did not show that side as being lean at that speed.

Glad it worked out.
