Your 225 would work fine for what you have planned. Rather than spending time and money on adapters cooling, and cutting you can spend the time and money on the 225 to build it.

I doubt that the 225 will ever be considered a hot rod motor but it should have the power to pull some hills and trails. I not sure what kind of power that you can get out of a 225.

You can look into a 4.3 v6 GM - Go with a vortec out of a late 90's model and you have the best of both worlds. Reasonable power and compact size.

If your concern is having enough power for AZ roads I wouldn't worry about the 225 too much. I have the low gear ratio, 3.73 I think it is, and my commando crawls up and over with no problem. Just this last Saturday I went down into a deep dirt wash that was so steep going down and coming up we were concerned the front of the Jeepster would torpedo the other side rather than bottoming out and coming up. It came close to nosing in but didn't. In 4 low it just crawled right up and out without excessive reving. Didn't spin the tires either. I have hunted all over AZ for 20 years. The biggest problems I run into are sandy washes and inclines made of lose rocks. In those situations tires seem to be the more the important factor. But, I am more of a finesse type than a power type. I guess what I am saying here is if you have the low gears, good tires and a few inches of lift, the 225 isn't going to be what kept you from getting through.

Regards,
Gary

I have a 1971 Buick 231 in my 1971 Jeepster and it makes very good power. I had a large diameter exhaust with a glass pack installed. It's louder than I wanted but the tone suits the Jeepster fine!

The turbo 3.8 (231) would serisouly kick!

I don't know of any body off hand but I do have contacts in town that I can call. I'll make some calls this week but I need to know what you want to do. Do you want to bore it out or do you want a stock replacement or what? Not being a gear head myself I do not know all the options or possibilities. So think about it and let me know.

BTW, I was thinking about a Commando I saw in town that had a V8. They hacked the front end to install a pair of large ugly fans to deal with the cooling problem. It was for sale when I saw it. The cooling issue becomes a nightmare when its 110 in the shade, the sun is beating down and there is no breeze. When you end up sitting at the light when its like that you'll be glad you kept the 225. You'll also be glad you stuck in a four row radiator and an efficient fan. Those are the two things my PO did right. It never goes over 180 degrees.

So, again, let me know what you want to do and I'll make some calls.

Regards,
Gary

I think you will be glad you stayed with the 225. A used 231 would also be easy to get ahold of from a junkyard or wrecked car, and swaps in with almost no mods.

here's a list of engine rebuilders in Phoenix. I have no knowledge on who's best.

You can also look into TA Performance.
