Default Advance v-6 Headers

Can someone who has these on their v-6 Commando post of pic of how they are routed outside of the frame and what type of muffler pipe system they used. Is there any way to still route the exhaust over the rear axle when using these headers? Thanks

I had these headers on my 71 until recently. With mine, it required notching and removing the front outer body mount on each side of the tub for header clearance. There are two mounts on each side in the area about where your feet are so you still had one on each side after clearancing for the headers. I then ran the pipe only a few inches from the collector, had a small oval muffler, and then a short tailpipe which exited on each side in front of the rear tire. I wrapped the headers back to the collector with insulating wrap.

My impressions were:

Heat level increased inside the vehicle and under the hood even with the headers wrapped.
I liked the sound, just a slight roar but not very loud especially when idling around off road.
I was running an Offy intake and an edelbrock 500 and the headers all of which were put on at the same time. I did feel a noticeable although not large increase in power, and didn't notice any loss of low end torque.

The mufflers and headers did not hang below the stock rockers, but later I trimmed them as I modified the vehicle more and more. Once I trimmed the rockers the headers hung down just about to the same level. I survived four trips to Tellico last winter with no problem, but I was playing around on some rocks locally and hung one of the headers. I then had to back off of the rock and it kinked the header pretty bad.

I switched back to stock exhaust manifolds and a single exhaust.

Overall, I liked the headers and they would be fine for a moderately wheeled vehicle with untrimmed rockers, but they are too vulnerable with the setup I had and eventually it caught up with me. If you want to go on hard core rocks or any where you might hang up in the center of the vehicle I would not recommend these.

I have not used them nor do I know anygbody who has, but Sanderson makes shorty(block hugger) headers. It seems to me that these would better suit any application. They are short no worries about damage when rock crawling or any other type of off roading. You can keep your exhaust system inside the frame rails etc... here is a link to a web page with pictures. They are not cheap but just might be what the doctor ordered!!

Headers (pr), Buick V6
