Default Commando Fuel Tank Filler

Does anyone remember the post on how to make one of these. Pulled out my 67 Commando Roadster Convertible yesterday and gas was gushing out from under the rig, found that ethanol had eaten through the rubber piece that connects the filler tube to the gas tank. Jeepsterman in NJ does not have replacement part. If you have a line on this part would appreciate a recommendation. Sealed off filler hole in tank with plumbing cap (rubber) until I can get repair. Thanks.

I made a filler pipe out of exhaust tubing. Made it in two pieces that the Muffler shop bent for me. The two pieces are connected with some rubber tubing. Works fine.

Thumbs up Filler Tube replacement

Great minds think alike! I did the same thing. The deteriorated part was that S shape rubber (#16 as above schematic in the service manual shows) that goes from the filltube to the gas tank. Had the Meineke shop bend up elbows to the same as best they could to match the piece in steel that needed replacing and made the two ends the right sizes (2" dia tank side end 2 5/8 on the fill side ) and then used a 180 degree bend rubber plumbing connector to go to the gas tank from the steel replacement that Meineke bent this replaced pieces 14, 15, 16 and 17. The muffler shop charged me nothing since I've done biz there for about a dozen years - they used a piece of scrap - I gave the pipe mechanic $10 for a tip and the rubber piece I got at Lowes for $7.43 and it came with the bands and can always replace that if it goes again.

The ethanol is the killer in the gas so don't keep a full tank anymore.
Thanks to all for your help.

Be careful with the rubber connector. Technically with fuel hoses you should only use fuel rated hose or plastic. The rubber connector may be alright now but could deteriorate over time. Just a heads up.

Default Filler Tube Rubber

I agree, however in the absence of fuel rated rubber in this shape I have had to use plumbing grade. The plumbing grade can always be replaced if it eats through again. Do you know of any fuel rated rubber or plastic that can be purchased in the 2 inch id that is flexible enough to make a 180 degree bend?
Thanks

I used fuel rated rubber and since no one can affdord to fill a tank anymore it should last until something better comes along. That diesel conversion is starting to call my name now that my buddy is making home brew diesel in his garage.

They make a fuel fill marine hose that is very light and has a wire to keep it from collapsing it can do a 180 without any problem. Most local Marine suppliers will have it handy. Manufacturer's are Novaflex hose; Thermoid and Titan Industries. The plumbing connectors will fail rapidly as they are not resistant to petroleum especially the aromatics that are added in today's fuel.

After replacing my fuel filler with a fuel door and filler from a TJ Wrangler, I searched high and low for fuel rated hose to mate everything up to my stock fuel tank. Since the middle of Montana is not exactly full of "marine suppliers" I finally tried some marine fill hose from eBay, hoping it would work. It was the correct diameter and had the wire to strengthen it, but it was not at all flexible. I could get it to do a 180 if I had about 4 feet to work with. No way would it make close to any bends in the area I had to work with under my Commando. Nothing else I found would work either. I finally found a used original filler hose that I was able to make work.

If somebody KNOWS of something that will work, I think it would be extremely helpful for others to have part numbers and descriptions and suppliers with the EXACT product and EXACTLY where to find it. As I said, I searched for quite awhile and still couldn't find anything that would work. The marine hose I bought looks exactly like the link provided by Sail Cat, but as I stated, no luck in getting it to work.

As to the plumbing connectors, I had a thought. Would coating the insides with some of that fuel tank liner/seal stuff work? Would that help it be more fuel resistant? I don't know that much about the stuff, but I almost went that route until I found the original filler.

Thanks.
