Default Clutch Problems

Hello,

I have a 1969 Jeepster Commando. I'm having a problem with the clutch. The clutch used to be real hard to push. A couple of years ago, the cable broke thru the floor, I broke a cable and bent fork. Then I found a website that said there was a cure for this problem. I bought the parts that this guy used and my clutch worked great for about a year.
Last week, the clutch cable just snapped. I bought a new one and the clutch is very hard to push. It worked once to test it out, then it broke the hanger on the back of the pedal. Any ideas?? Everything looks right. The fork looks like it's in place. Real hard to push again. Cable works smooth. Could the pressure plate be bad?
Would switching to an automatic tranny be a better idea? How hard would that be to do? I don't offroad with it. It's just an in-town cruiser that pulls my (light)sailboat.

Any info would be appreciated. I live in Iowa and have only seen 2 other Jeepsters around here in 10 years! I haven't found anyone who works on them. I do my own work anyway.

Eric

Welcome,

Unless you broke something in your clutch, consider this:

hydraulic clutch setup

Once again, this won't fix a broken clutch, but it is one alternative to the cable....

Do a search here for "hard clutch pedal cure" - it'll tell you part numbers, and how to make sure it's properly set up. Do it right and it's so easy you can use 2 fingers.

The cable - aftermarket cables are trash. Take one to a place that specializes in cables as a sample - phone book, "cables." They'll make you one much heavier and easier than stock. And it's cheaper than the aftermarket Chinese junk anyway.

Make sure the cable housing is lashed down so it doesn't move around like a snake = wasted motion.

It takes the proper TO bearing - the long one - the reason it got hard after awhile was you used the short one. It works till it wears slightly.

I followed the procedure written up by RRich on 8/13/00 several years ago. Worked like a charm. Thanks again RRich

I would suggest switching it over to a hydraulic clutch setup as well. You can buy the parts from wilwood for less then $200. Drill a few holes and fab up a bracket, done.
