Default Speedo cable wire?

Okay, here goes, my first (hopefully not too silly) question:

There is a wire coming out of my speedo cable. It is in the engine compartment, where it curves down to go under the floor pan. Any idea what that is for? And where is is supposed to go? Right now it is about 6" long and not attached to anything. I've checked the wiring diagrams and tech manual as best I could, and also tried searching on this forum. No luck!

Any help is appreciated!

Does your speedometer work? Your description sounds like the speedometer cable has been cut off. If so, it is not an electrical wire, but a mechanical cable that is turned by the transfer case and makes your speedometer work. It should be around 60" long and attached to the T/C.

If that is not what it is, more information may help identify it.

The only electrical wires coming from the speedometer are from the plug on the back of it and they are all shown on the electrical wiring diagram,

Brad.

Didn't the commandos have some type of emission control device inline with the speedometer? That might be it....

Yup, they did. It's a signal generator, connected to----something or other. Probably doesn't work any more any way. Don't worry about it.

That appears to be it. All the emission control stuff was taken off years ago. And I just looked under the emission section of the tech manual and found it. Never would have thought of looking in THAT section...

Thanks for all your help.

Carl

That's an inline speed sensor. Might come in handy for a cruise install or fuel injection...
