Default Hot air coming through Shifter

On my 70 automatic, I have hot air coming up through the shifter, even with the dinky plastic boot that wraps around the shfter, but has a slit to allow the shifter to move back and forth. Im assuming there must have been some sort of cover on the bottom where the shifter meets the floor, but mine had none when I took it apart. What have people done to keep hot air from blowing up from the shifter??

Your right, there's an upside down looking boot under the slotted flat top rubber. Fits on the same screws. Probably have to get one from a partster or make something else work since it can't be seen.

I've lived 10 years with a bandana stuffed into the boot to keep the hot air out and the shifter from rattling apart! LOL

I've always considered that to be an auxiliary heater.

Of course, I live where it snows 9 months out of the year.

Although I'm still putting my Jeepster back together ( with the new 350 Buick, I also had the same problem, to the point where it warped the housing of the neutral safety switch and then that broke. My solution was to take a scrap piece of that "Refectix" bubble wrap HVAC insulation and cut a slit in it to slip over the shift lever and place on the floor, then then bolt the shifter housing down. It helps. On my current rebuild, I'm now installing one, maybe two, thermostatic controlled 3" dia., 12v computer type fans inside the console, that I bought from.....I think, Cyberguys.com for about $5 each. I'll have an override switch so they can be shut off manualy, or if (normally) "on" when the ignition is "on", then the fan(s)will come on when temps are above the preset "on" temp. The hot air will blow on to the shifter base , and out from the console ( the rear ashtray hole) with a grille over the hole to finish it off with a clean look. The fans are vitually silent, indoors, and when cinsidering the interior noise of a Jeepster, it's not the least thingto worry about. The fans draw .145 Amps, so a very low amp fuse is all that's needed if one thinks it should be. If one fan doesn't keep the shifter and Neut switch cooled down, I'll put in the second one. You can also remove the entire floor hump and install a piece of Dynamat on the underside ( clean it first, ), or, hell, just stuff a chunk of fiberglass insulation in next to the shifter for that true shade tree 10 second fix. Here's what I did to eliminate all the hot air, noise and dust comming through.

Closed up the hole and switched to a B&M Megashifter that uses a cable instead of all the linkage on the stock setup. Just a small hole is needed for the cable and a grommet to fit through.

Joe, if you need a stock neutral safety switch, I have one with your name on it. Let me know.

Thanks for all the ideas guys. If joe doesnt take that switch, I could use it if you still have it, mine was already toast, I bypassed it, but could really use it for back-up lights as well as neutral safety again.
