Default Suspension Lifts

I’m getting my plans together for what to do to the commando at the end of this summer after I have earned some money. I’m not going to have a lot of funds to work with so i hope to go with inexpensive parts. I’m not going to be doing any serious trails, just the relaxing trail cruse. I want to get the commando up off the ground so i can get some bigger tires under it and allow them to articulate as needed. I was looking threw the JC Whitney catalogue and found a 2.5" suspension lift kit from Rough Country but the only applications are for CJ's and Wranglers. I did a search on the forum and didn’t find what i was looking for. Will a 1969-1975 CJ5, CJ6 kit work on the commando? Also when lifting it 2.5" what other modifications do I need to make? Heres a like for it.

Your best bet is a SOA(spring over axle) lift.Alcon is very pricey, but high quality. If you or someone you know can do some welding,it will be much less than a set of new springs. And gets you about 5" of lift.

Well that’s too bad they don’t work. Too easy huh . Well, having to do with the SOA, what are all the parts, problems and abilities needed to pull it off on a stock rig? Id still rather have new springs. How much would it be to find a place in town to have new ones made up? Would I just be better off going with an add-a-leaf? Again I really can’t afford to go with the nicest stuff. I would like to keep this around $400. I do realize that it should be done right once but unfortunately that’s not going to happen with my limited funds . Thanks.

If you can stretch your budget just a bit you can get the Alcan springs. I seem to recall paying around $275 for my rear springs last summer and they have a few $$ extras for the SOA setup. Really reevaluate that budget as I have spent twice what I should have if it were just done Alcan the first time. I will post a great flexy picture that is on my friends camera right now, but attached it an ok poser shot. Go Alcan.

Bluto, what size Swampers are ya runnin? And how do those lifted springs work in a SOA application?Stock axles?

Last time I checked with Alcon,a full set of springs was about 900.00. But I may be purchasing two sets in the future.I was considering some lifted springs for my 73 which already is SOA.I may need a few more inches for my 37's.

I am currently running the 36x13x16 bias ply swamps. When I did the last round of suspension mods, I wanted clearance for 38's and it looks like I will be able to. They do ok with the stock axles, but I am in the market right now to go to wide track as I have a really poor turning radius and a wee bit tippy. Sorry if I misquoted the price of the springs as I have a bad habit of bumping my head on things really hard!!! If you want an experimental rear spring pack, I have the original rear spring main leaf re arched packed up with some YJ springs you can have for shipping. As they sit, they are very stiff, but if some one had more patients than me, they could get these to work pretty well.
