Default Dann 44 Spline Count

Hey folks.

I got a Dana 44 from Toad a few years back and am now thinking baout putting a locker of some type in it.

Does anyone know what the spline count would be? It has 11 inch brakes and the drums just pull off, unlike the replaced Dana 30 that had the nut holding everything on the axle shaft.

Also maybe a good suggestion for what type of locker to install. I do use this as a daily driver.

30 spline axle shafts for that rear end.

The locker question is more of a crap shoot that you would think.
Any drop in locker is self-destructive by design. A limited slip is useless as a real locker. A spool is as smooth as you could ask for but wears your rear tires out. A Detroit is scary sounding and creates a lot of shock loading on your rear diff. ARB's have too many leakable or breakable parts.
Mechanically and electrically engaged lockers (Ox and others) have a built in failure point, hopefully outside of the diff cover.
My favorite is still a FULL SPOOL, I'm running a Detroit now and it always makes me wonder WTF is going on back there!

I put a lock right in mine a couple of years back and haven't had any problems yet (inevitable??). Granted, I am not running a bunch of horsepower and am very conservative with the gas pedal while turning. The pleasant tick tick tick is much less frightening to the BAM of the detroit. Plus, the average wrench twister can do the lock right in a couple of hours! Unless you offroad a lot, I don't think I would run a locker in a daily driver especially if it will ever see snow and ice. Lockers do strange things when accelerating (auto steer left) and decelerating (right). Good luck!

Jeep Dana 44's came with 19 or 30 splines.

The 30 splines is one piece, semi floating and more common. Used in Commandos and others from 1970 on.

The 19 spline is not as strong, two piece, tapper shaft, Pre-1970, heard someone say 1970 models have both?

They require different Lockers also. IMHO not worth putting a locker in a 19 spline and I like my ARB's (except for the cost).

x2.......I have had the same experience with mine. the front however is a different story.......hang on to that wheel on hard ground, and don't even think about using it on pavement. And I can't remember if I had to take out the diff on the 44, to get the Lockright in the diff. (I think I had to remove the ring gear for clearance) I know I did have to on the 27 front.
