Default Auto Trans Should it stay or should it Go

New Guy Hear.
I have a stock 68 commando 225 v6 and the turbo automatic. The motor is being rebuilt and i was going to do the same with the trans, BUT I want dana 44 front and rear with a lift and 33's should i keep the automatic or upgrade to another automatic? Any info would greatly help.

P.S. I would like to keep it automatic Or should i just get a stick????

1. Welcome!
2. Some may ask for you to fill out profile a little more, (make sure your not a spy or sumthin'?)
3. It all depends on your plans for the Jeepster, and whether you mind shifting or not. A stick can give you better crawl and freeway ratios, but wheelin with an auto can be nice.

I had my th400 rebuilt with a 3.15:1 1st gear and have been very happy with it, but i wish it had some more legs on the freeway. it's all a trade-off.

Anyway, there have been plenty of discussions on here in the past about this, so the search function is your friend, but ultimately you have to decide for yourself.

I'd keep the auto.

The terbo 400 is probably the best trans you can get for your money. "Just what you have". But unless you get a lower transfer gear or put lower gears in the rear ends you will not have low enough low range for rough off road stuff. 456 would be good in the rear ends.3 or 4 to one in the transfer case.$$$ it goes on and on. I have over $4000 from the motor back to the ground. and did most of the work.

That tranny is as tough as they come for stock units. If it works good, keep it. If you change, then your looking at adapters, or finding different setups to make the change work.

If you have the D20 t/c its a good one for this application, 44's are great if you got them too.

You should have a Dana 20 T/C now if stock.

Bolt pattern between Tranny & T/C is often referred to as a "Texas" bolt pattern (shaped like Texas).
Dana 300's will be a round bolt pattern.
Dana 18 have offset drivelines: front & rear drive. off-set to line up with an offset front & rear axles to the passenger side(older jeeps).

Those Scout axles are a great improvement but you will not be able to just bolt them up. Do some research. Scout fronts have zero camber and you will need to change that to 4 to 8 degress (maybe more if you go SOA). Might want to seriously consider outboarding & new spring also.

Oh yea Welcome to the sickness!
