| | Auto Trans Radiator in a Manual trans jeepster
The radiator that I'm going to put back in my jeep came from a jeepster with an automatic transmission. I was wondering, can I just put it in and run it like it is? I've got the two holes in the bottom for the auto transmission lines...do I need to plug them up or anything? I was told by a local shop that I did not have to. What do you guys think? Do I need to do anything with it? Is coolant going to leak out from there? Thanks

Nothing is going to leak out of the holes. They actually lead to a closed cooler inside the radiator. I would plug them up with a threaded plug or a push in plastic plug to keep crap out of them

Ditto to what BusJoe says, I'm running the same in mine.

The only bad thing I CAN SEE IS YOU LOOSE THE WATER THAT WOULD TAKE THE PLACE OF The coolant tube that is in the bottom of the radiator for the trans fluid. About a quart or so.

I am going to have the same set up in mine as well. I am also installing power steering. Does it make sense to use the built in cooler to cool the power steering fluid?

It does not cool it. It heats it to the same temp. as the eng. and any heat it makes on its own is on top of that. external coolers are the best. Some power steerings have them.

Al, you are saying that the trans cooler will heat the fluid rather than cool it?
I can see if the trans fluid is very cold, and the engine water is hot, it would possibly raise the fluid temp to match the water temp. Is that what you are saying?
Please elaborate.

The fluid in the tranny runs MUCH hotter than the normal 180 that is in the radiator. With that in mind, the cooler in the radiator helps bring down the temp of the tranny fluid. An external cooler connected in series with the one in the radiator helps bring down the temp of the fluid even further, which is the reason they are usually referred to as "auxiliary" coolers.
If you want to find out whether or not it will help cool your steering, check the temp of your P/S fluid after driving for a while. If it's over 180 degrees (or whatever temp thermostat you have in the engine), then routing the fluid through the internal cooler will help.
Otherwise, the biggest advantage you'll gain is extra fluid capacity, which in itself will be a bonus, as that extra capacity, in itself, will tend to keep the fluid somewhat cooler.

Ok then, I have a question. Will there be some danger in running the power steering fluid at 180 degrees? If not, then the added fluid capacity and pump/box/hoses could actually help keep the radiator cooler by drawing the heat away from the radiator. As a bonus if I have an isolated incident where I may be using the steering heavily (rock crawling) the radiator would keep the power steering from boiling.
Or, am I missing something?
