Got a 71 V6 straight shift and noticed this am that a small metal tube is sheared off just at the passenger side rear of the exhaust manifold. There's a nut that it looked like it had been attached to. What does this go to and how important is it? Can it be driven? Don't know how long it's been broke.
Looked in my service manual and couldn't figure it out myself. Looks like the tubing goes down to the tranny somewhere. Couldn't get under the jeepster due to rain and mud.

Re: Broken tubing
Any chance you could get a picture? Even though it's a standard it kind of sounds like the vacumn line for an automatic unless someone installed a vent tube for the transfer case .
Al - sounds like the heat riser that goes from the exhaust manifold up to the carb for the automatic choke. If you have a manual choke, then its not needed.
I second that. If it was screwed directly into the manifold then it probably was the automatic choke. Do a search and you probably can find plenty of info on switching it out for a manual as many have done.
I traced the sheared tubing to the intake of the carb...just above the butterfly of the carb (emissions???)...the tube into the bottom of the choke housing on the side of the carb comes from a small flange on the top of the exhaust manifold. There's nothing wrong with the choke. It's tubing and operation are fine.
Can the sheared tubing be removed and plugged on the side of the carb??? Don't see how it's doing anything now.
