Hey, I am looking at doing the same. My reason is that I am trying to get it low enough for me to get into my Commando from my wheelchair. Just cannot lift myself up high enough to get my butt into the seat and the Commando looks silly with low profile tires on it without also lowering the body.
Anyone have some more ideas on how I could get into and out of my Commando. Difficult lifting myself up approximately 10" with just my arms to use. I have thought about putting the axles over the springs but do not know if that might cause me some problems later.
I think your axles are probably allready on top of the springs. Thats the way they came stock. You could put lowering blocks between the axle and the spring in the amount that you want to lower it. Your bio says you like going on back country trails, it you lower it, you may need to watch it, so you don't hit anything underneath. What about mounting a cage around the door opening, sort of like what a roll cage would look like, heck it could even be a roll cage. That way you could either make some kind of handle that swings out, or down that you could pull yourself up.
Yes, your right about the axles. I got a better look at it last night. I already have a roll cage but I am not suppose to lift myself because in the long run it will destroy my shoulders. Then I would not be able to do much
of anything. I do like the back roads, but I am always concerned about breaking down. I can't just walk out. I carry a cell phone and a cb with me, just in case.
It looks to me that if I turned the leaf springs over and then mounted the axles on top that I could possibly get 3-4 inches. Not sure of course. Will need to find someone that does this type of thing and find out what they would have to say.
I have also thought about trying to trade the Commando for a new Jeep that has coil springs. Found a kit from "Outback Innovations" that can raise and lower approximately 7 inches. I could set the body on the frame when tranferring in and out and then pump up the suspension with the onboard air compressor and be on my way. Now if I can just find someone that would trade with me. Still have not found out when Jeep went to coil springs. Will need to do that before I follow that idea.
Thanks for the ideas though. I really appreciate it.
Take a tommy-lift and use the drop-down section as your seat mount...and have a switch mounted both on the outside and inside for controlling it. You'd have to resupport the tub frame then modify the door jam some but I believe it would work for what you need to have a fourwheel drive and yet be able to get in and out of the vehicle.
There's more to it than what I've typed but if you're interested in the idea, I can write up a few drawings on it and send them to you. The platform would have a safety lock system on it so it wouldn't drop down while you're moving or sitting there.
I was looking at doing a tommy lift on the back of the jimmy, Would that make it a jimmy lift
But I ran out of room in a hurry. I wound up cutting a junk yard tailgate so it opens down past horizontal and using some teliscoping ramps for the powered wheelchair.
I've been collecting parts for years to do a 2wd convert. Using a DJ front straight axle, 302 v-8, c-4 trans, and a D-44 rear diff. I have all but the c-4 which is easy to obtain. I might use a short C-6.
I just purchased a perfect 69 body and already have a 69 Ruster that runs great. I plan on either going two wheel drive sand drag with 440 or 360 4wd from a ramcharger. Mopar meets Jeepster = SWEETNESS!!
