Windshield gasket

Allright, I need a good gasket and a windshield. I have searched the board and it seems "The Jeepsterman" is the best source for the gaskets and I can take the old glass to a shop to get a new one cut but I was wondering is there anyone else selling gaskets for cheap or should I head down to see cranky and spend $50? (I know I'm a cheap SOB) I was thinking of using plexiglass but I may need to be pass inspection which could be a problem being SOA anyway.

I bought one for The Jeepsterman and will use the new one when I put the windsheild back in but the old one came out without any damage. You may be lucky and be able to reuse the old gasket. I have the old one I took out hanging on the wall of the garage.

Cheap Trick (courtesy of LoneWolf) is to "re-condition" old gaskets with a liberal wipe down with Varsol. While real Varsol is getting hard to find, it sure softened mine up nicely (and at 30°F to boot!) [img]images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

The same place that you get the glass should be able to supply gasket that would work, I don't know how well Jeepstermans matches the original or if that is a concern but you could go to the glass place and check theirs. I have bought all rubber to replace mine, none of it from Jeepsterman. I am waiting for 50 Ft. of the seal above the door window to arrive now. Metro

Yeah I'm definitely not too concerned with originality and would have rather reused my old one but it was all cut up by the [img]images/graemlins/AR15firing.gif[/img] PO in order to remove the windshield. I might look into the price of a universal type that I can just cut to fit.

I bought and installed a windshield gasket from the Jeepsterman and its real close to the original. It even has the channel in it. One of the hardest windshields to put in for me though. I think all the rubber that Jeepsterman gets is from Metro. Ive had the gasket in for about 5 years now and its doing fine. I would advise putting a good sealer on both sides of the gasket. 3m makes some good stuff for that. Use liberal amounts on bothe the windshield and the fram, espcially aroung the bottom 90 degree corners and along the top. The lip that the hardtop creates forces alot of water around the top area of the windshield. From what I remember I used the cord around the gasket way of installing plus some hook type tools that a friend had. Having the gasket warm and pliable helps a ton too.

So Caver, where DOES one get that Varsol? I think I can retain the rubber when I reinstall the glass if I can rejuvinate. Thanks.

i'm pondering a jeepster with NO windows whatsoever. got a quote for around $450 for all the glass. the doors and hatch glass are tempered to handle rattling and because of the notch in the hatch glass, which compromises integrity.
i plan to either soak the rubber in a solution of some kind (suggestions needed) or do as i did with my 68 suburban hatch.
i'm cheap, so i cut the window out of the old crusty seal with the knife perpendicular to, and touching the outer edge of the glass (feel it through the rubber). after removing the wedge of rubber that held the glass in, i just dropped the new glass in and sealed it in like caulking a bath tub.
that black windshield caulk for new cars works awesome. make sure you use masking tape on the window placed about 1/2" inside of rubber's cut inner edge to make a clean line(or look through the glass and match the inner rubber's profile). that stuff is messy, so keep rags around too. i should say, i did that hatch while it was open, so the glass laid flat and the caulk couldn't run. not to worry, it has a pretty long working time and it's forgiving.
cost me just $6 and looks/works great. if you ever need to yank your windows again, just do it all over. slick.
