Default D27 Disc Info

Somebody sent me these when I was building on the Croc('6x). The quality isn't that good, but it has all the info. Also there's a couple of pages on upgrading to studs (verses bolts) on the closed knuckle axles.

I was looking over that info just for info because I am doing a conversion on the D30 open knuckle I have (if I ever get home to work on it). The used a backing plate in that conversion. Do you need that if you use the 1.125" 77-78 CJ rotors? Thanks

Chris

Backing plate or dust shields? There really isn't a backing plate on the "big brake" setup (ASSuming your using jeep parts). I think the "chevy" parts incorporate the backing plate, dust shield, & caliper bracket into one piece. I skipped the dust shield on mine...

The backing plate is also the mount for the caliper so
youll need it. The dust shield is welded to the backing plate.

I've seen threads using the Jeep 6 bolt caliper bracket and others using the chevy backing plate to which the caliper mounts. In the write up it mention some early jeeps used the Ford disc brake set up. Will the rotors /calipers from a Ford truck or large car fit also?

Ok, so I guess you just need the backing plate for the Chevy set up. I am going with the Jeep 6 bolt brackets and all Jeep hardware so I guess I don't need it. It just seemed different than all the info that I had previously read concerning disc swaps.

Chris,
Just follow the my write up, and you won't have any problems. If you have any questions I can help with let me know.
After it was over, I was pissed that it so easy! It took less than 3 hours to bolt it all up (it was VERY hot & we stopped frequently )

Just checked out the write up...nice info. I just thought to show some pics that I took of my project
I used Jeep J-10 (Dana 44) front calipers/backing plates-dust shield. I used my hub (dana 27) and bought
a new rotor only(without the hub) The calipers are 6 bolt and the rotors are the thick type. The lug pattern
is 5 1/2 on 5. Hardest part was getting the right rotors (thick 5 lug without the hub)
Ill show one pic of the grinding needed and also what my my calipers look like.(you can kinda see the backing
plate. Also a pic of the machining needed on the hub to get it flat so you dont have any runout.
