It is best to circulate the water all of the time. If the birdbath is your only mode of aeration, then it should run continuosly also. I would guess that your pump runs the water through a filtration device? The filter itself usually has an area for beneficial bacteria to adhere to which does as much for your water quality as anything.
Leave it all running, clean the serviceable area of your filter regularly, and spend all of this newly found free time working on that Jeepster!

LOL, okay, so after looking at the link, me calling mine a "pond" is way overstateing. How about, "bucket of water that has a pump for a mini waterfall effect" instead. No filter, so far no plants either. As far the other one, it's a bird bath that has a small pump for the water to come out of a statue on top. It's just for attracting the birds and to sound nice when we eat outside.
I'm going to read up a little and deal with it later. Tomorrow is actually going to be a full Jeepster day. body lift and finish the wiring.

If that's the case then maybe put a motion detector with a long run time on it. That way when you go out there it'll come on.
