Default Wanna be a newbie...

I've been looking at the Jeepsters and Commandos for about a month, hoping to buy one soon. Any pitfalls I should look for? Some hidden thing that goes wrong and costs a ton or can't be replaced? I've just restored a '65 mustang and found that advice and warnings ahead of a purchase are always a good way to start.

Thank you!
Kathleen

Congratulations on finding this board! There are many things to look out for - but also depends on if it is going to be a restoration, or an off-road project.

Fill out your profile so we know who we are talking to - someone may even know of one for sale near where you live.

They're pretty damned addictive. You have got to use your imagination sometimes. This board, and these people, are the best reference for both knowledge and parts. "Hidden" problems? Everything is pretty much out in the open, but you never know what's gonna break. I'm sure you learned that with the Mustang. Heck, I'm starting to think about my NEXT Jeepster. The NICE one!

Kathleen, you live in LA right? Why don't you follow some of us up to the Reno Ralley, where you can see tons of Jeepsters, get lots of ideas and talk with fellow Jeepster owners. Or you can fly up and back, it's pretty cheap right now. Look at the other posts on the board for one by JeepsterJim and find the Reno Ralley link.

Wow, we're almost neighbors! If you can make the rally it would be a great source of information and see a plethora of different Jeepsters. Maybe Tom will sell you his H/C!!!

The Rally sounds wonderful, however the mustang is getting PAINTED (!) that weekend. Must take out windows and all of that prior. Maybe the next event, something closer to L.A.?
I look forward to learning all the wonderful tricks, mods and quirks.

Unfortunately these rallys are far and few between. Last one was 5 years ago. None so far in the LA area.

Folks have shown up at the rallies and gatherings with Jeepsters for sale.... If you were there and looking at a rig for sale.... you'd have at your request the advice of a couple of dozen experienced owners. Could be very good circumstances for a newbie looking for a rig.

The guys are 100% right. Not only will you meet fantastic Jeepster owners but you will learn how to buy one correctly which can save you LOTS of money. I have heard that a few Jeepsters might be there 4-sale. Flying up is dang cheap and the best day is Sunday if wanting to look over all the different Jeepsters. Heck you can paint the Mustang so other time.

I agree with everyone else here on the Forum "get to Reno" and bring your notebook and a camera! Thats my plan for finding what to do next on the HEEP. I wouldn't worry about not knowing anyone. Hell, I've only have met 3 members so for.
Take the Amtrack! if your Mustang is in the beauty parlor!
