Mine MIGHT have had a tag in the driver door jamb, hinge side. There's tape or sticker/decal residue on the front side, between a plugged hole and the door stay. Nothing even remotely legible after 30 years, looks like something I need to scrub off.
Yeah, why the hassle? You've got the VIN plate, title, and bill of sale....what else could you need. A note from Epsteins mother?
Thank goodness our "great state" hasn't gotten that stuupid yet.
On my 71 I have vin #s on both the firewall and the drivers side door jam. I personally wouldnt do the
highway patrol route if you want to keep the firewall tag. They will remove the tag and rivet a new
tag wherever they want to. They did this to one of my vehicles. It was somewhat of a rare car and I wanted the original tag to be on there. I would go to a different DMV if possible, or do the other options
suggested.

Re: california DMV blues
Well, I agree with what the rest of the guys have told you.
On a '73 there is a tag on the driver side inside door frame between the hinges. and under the hood, drivers side above the master cylinder. I have never seen the 'mystery location' on the frame.
If either or both are missing, ask if you can fill out a statement of facts to explain why they are missing. They should give you a new "sticker" with the info to put on your vehicle. It is very common on boats, trailers and any home built vehicles. I have one of these stickers on my home built boat trailer. You will have to "show" them the vehicle, usually by taking it to them by appointment! Afterwards you can stamp the VIN # in permanently yourself.
As for using the 'partster' Vin ..... be careful if you caught in a lie, your DMV ordeal is just beginning.
One last thought, I have found that if you go to one of the smaller DMV offices you can get much better service I have found that I can drive 50 miles and save 4 hours in line. I've been though this several times ..... good luck!
Just another thought/question, why is it that they want to know where the other VIN is? I can't in my wildest dreams think that a DMV person is gonna crawl under the vehicle to verify the second VIN number. CA DMV personnel are bureaucratic, not energetic! I would go with the statement of fact document or try a different representative/office.
Funny thing, my son is outside sanding the frame rails before we paint and he just called ne out to show me that there are numbers on the right front frame rail, in front of the brake hose connection. Stamped deep into the frame.
