HELP!! While changibg the front shocks the top mounting stud broke off. Are these screw in studs or pressed in from behind the frame.
Need help quick in Mass.
I think they are factory welded to a small triangulated brace which is riveted onto the frame. Bad news if it's the driverside because the pass. side brake line runs thru the stud mount....at least it does on mine.
I'm getting ready to do F-250 shock towers on mine, so if I'm able to get them off, your welcome to them.
On My 70, the stud broke years ago. I just removed the old stud, drilled the hole for a 3/4" bolt, installed it, and tack welded the head. After I remounted the shock, tightened up the nut, I counted out about 8 threads, and cut the remainder of the bolt off. I then rounded the end of the bolt off with a grinder so when I need to change the shock again I wouldn't have any problem with the nut. It doesn't look factory, but it works better than stock.
Left the u-shaped bracket on the frame. Just removed the broken stud. You may have to grind the tack weld from the old stud head, which is on the engine bay side. I was wrong on the bolt size it is a 5/8"NC X 4-1/2". After the old stud was removed, had to dress the hole up a bit for the new bolt to go through.
But Now I think about it a bit, I am wondering if the shock mounts on a 70 Commando are different?
On my 73, the whole U-shaped bracket broke off. Passenger-side front. One day something started going bang-bang-bang down in there while I was driving. What the hell THIS time?
The shock was still bolted to the upper stud, with most of the bracket still attached to it, flopping around loose in the wheelwell. The bottom of the bracket was still mounted on the frame. Cracked right through.
How can stuff like this possibly happen to parts as strong as that? But it does.
Those U-shaped brackets are both riveted AND welded to the frames, by the way. At least mine was.
