Default Dana 27 King Pin Question

I have to replace my kingpin bearings and I have a few questions.
Are the kingpin bearings lubricated from the gear oil in the knuckle, or by grease. I didn't think the axle ujoint would fling that much oil up to the top bearing. And if a vehicle that is used in 2WD all the time, wouldnt the bearing starve for lubrication if the Ujoint isnt flinging oil up there?

When I install them I am going to grease them up good and seat them down. I was wondering about the lubrication of them, because I got a set of axle ujoints that are "maintenance free" permenant lubricated kind, and I was thinking that I could run the axle without filling the knuckle with gear oil, or grease.

I previously used grease in the knuckle. But when I was going to do my disc conversion, i bought new knuckle gaskets and then planned on using gear oil to lube.

But I I can just grease up me kingpin bearings, and go with my maintenance free ujoints, then I dont have to put any fluid in the knuckle, then I would never have the mess of oil leaking through the seals.

Does this sound Kosher, or am I dreaming?

Also Does anyone have the "Kingpin replacment" article from four hweel drive and off road? I lost my copy and I need to know how to shim the caps. Also what is the "pounds" they said the knuckle needs to turn. The measurement they used with that fishing pound scale.

Thanks

Both my Father and I have used grease for many years in the knuckle. Chances are oil will never stay in there.

I've always used the service manual for specs.

I have used only grease in mine. I may just keep it empty. I am using Mobil 1 grease currently. I will grease the king pin bearings. The bottom bearings will be fine, but i was worried about the top bearings having the grease drip out. I dont know how hot the kingpin bearings would get under normal use. I dont think it would get that hot to melt the grease so i think i will be safe. And the ujoints are the Maintenance free type. And I do not believe the brass bushings require lubrication, so all should be well to run them dry. Only other thing is for the knuckle gasket. Do they need a little film of grease to clean the knuckle ball?
