Default HEI timing

Have a new engine and everything is running great, however, I have been getting a little bit of "dieseling" when I turn off the engine. It's just one extra "pop" but it isn't right and it bothers me! I'm sure this is a timing problem but am a little reluctant to change the timing too much after reading other posts. 225 set at 6 BTDC, new timing chain set correctly, standard cam. I have tried running spark wires "neat" and also "ugly". Any ideas. Thanks.

How can it be timing when it's doing it's "pop" when the ignition's off?

Dieseling is because something inside the cyls is too hot. Too lean makes it run too hot (fuel being wet cools), or too rich a mixture (carbon glows when it's hot and ignites the mixture.)

Try setting the idle speed a little slower.

If it still persists, get an idle solenoid that holds the throttle open when the key's on, but shuts it when you turn the key off. They were standard equipment on most 2G's in the 60's and 70's.
Junkyard, $3?

Maybe your '71 is jealous of your Cummins?

What Rich says makes perfect sense (duh). I really thought it was timing because someone would come back and say either I or the engine was retarded
