Power Steering AMC 258 I-6
I have a '73 commando, 258 I-6, I think I have a two five eight (258)? At least according to the VIN but it also says I have a AMC 20 rear end but it's a Dana 44. So who knows! I read all I can find about power steering on this site and the short wheel site. Seems to mostly deal with V-6's and box only change overs.
Anyway:
1. how do you tell a AMC 258 from ???? Were the AMC 258's different from year to year? Appears so but when and what changes.
2. Has anyone put power steering on a '73 258 I-6?
Later years '78 up engines appear to be different than mine. The water pump, exhaust manifold, and block have mounting spots for the power steering pump (mine doesn't).
Here is a photo the pump I have, can anyone Identify it? off of a V-6 or V-8?? Jeep or ????
I was told it was off a '72 but the brackets don't line up with anything I have.
Also here is picture of my engine area and a photo of a later year showing to mounting points for the power steering whick my engine doesn't have.
Can anyone show me a photo to give me an example of what I need to find (brackets pulleys, etc).
here are photos of my pump(don't fit). Do you know what it's off of? V-6, V-8 or ??? I was told it was off a 72 Jeep 'parts jeep'.
Well this is getting kinda long winded and jumbled up. Please comment. I hope the photos come throught .... still new at this posting.
Maybe I can help. I have two "Partster-Junkster" 73 Commandos behind my barn in Maryland. One of them still has a straight six engine in it that runs. I BELIEVE it has power steering. I will check it tomorrow. If it does, I could probably take photos for you, make a few sketches if necessary, and even pull the brackets and send them to you.
I also have all the manuals and factory parts books for 72 & 73 Commandos. There is almost certainly a good diagram in there somewhere. The pictures in the parts books are particularly good.
I am sure Mark Vilbert on this Board would also have the correct parts you need. Check the Classifieds for his email. He has everything for Jeepsters and Commandos, at very reasonable prices, and really takes care of his customers.

Re: Power Steering AMC 258 I-6
Now I'm realy confussed. On another board I hear that some '71 and all '72-73 and some '74 have the power steering on the passenger side on the I-6's. I've never seen one yet but this fella swears it's in his shop manuals. I'm wondering how they ran the hoses? I wouldn't want them exposed to a rock or log? I wouldn't want them block air flow to the radiator? hummmm? Anyway the pump I have will not fit with the brackets I have. I hope to make at trip to J & W jeeps (wrecker in Sacramento area) he supposeityly has a ton of jeep stuff. It's 200 plus miles but I need to get this done so I can get the Heep out of the garage and back on the trail.
