Pic 10 - Shows contact button inserted, (thus the X rating), with the spring up. Be sure to coat both sides of rubber washer with di-electric grease or coil could burn out.

Pic 11 - Shows rubber washer placed over contact spring. Now it's ready for coil and cover.
This is the last pic, so reply away.
I would like to make special thanks to David Chun Sr. at Super Tune in Vancouver, WA, who helped me on his day off to disassemble, set up and filled me with all the information in this post. He has taught me quite a bit over the years and fixed countless problems I've had, but I learned gobs more on these distributors than before in just the time to shoot these pics.

Tim,
This thread should go into the archive hall of fame! It is at least going into the manual for the Jeepster.
Thanks,

Fantastic Tim, thanks.
Now we can do away with my non-artistic rendering.
Proves good pictures are woth a thousand words!
I wasn't aware of the difference between the Chevy and Buick coils.
Do you have one that has "shorted" that you could get a pic with that great camera? Showing how they get that "whitish" mark in the corners could help out someone too. And, maybe even the whitish marks on a plug wire jumping through?
Sorry, never enough is there?
Great job!!!!!!!!! |

RRich:
I love that drawing. Don't lose it. They'll probably want to hang it in the Louvre or something some day. I gotta leave tonite for a week in Spooner, WI. When I return, I'll see if he has any blown coils around for pics. Talking about coils, he says that you can see the difference on the scope between the Delco coils and the others. Only Delco distributors carry them. I guess one has to go to a GM dealer for them. Pricey at around $60, but accept no substitute. For the rest of the stuff, go to NAPA.

Excellent post, thanks for all the time in putting that together, I'm sure it'll save alot of us a bunch of time.
As for comparison, Rich's charcoal shaded artwork is pretty tough to beat.
Sorry Rich, couldn't resist |

Tim - thanks for posting that. I thought I understood it before, but it really makes sense now. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, I think I may have the wrong cap! Seems to me the "even fire" cap they sold me had the different size contacts inside. I noticed it, but didn't really think about it at the time since the old one was wrong, too. Gotta check it when I get home tonight.

The unfortunate thing - or maybe the fortunate thing, is that even and odd parts will interchange physically, even work together, but not right.
Rebuilders often get them mixed up.
Funny - I found a vehicle once that had the outer stator ring from an 8 cyl, and the inner pole piece (on the shaft) from a 6 cyl. It ran, not good, but it did run. My customer had just installed it - a "rebuilt" from a parts house. He noticed it ran strange, so he hooked it up to a scope. Just about that time I came into his shop. He showed me the pattern - 24 sparks where there should have been 8. Baffling at first, took awhile to track it down.
The really strange thing was it ran at low speeds and not that badly, just had trouble accelerating and running at about 200+.
I took it to the parts house - looked at several they had in stock that were the same. The rebuilder was close by, so I took one over there to show them.
Abdul the owner said - "If it fits I use it!" It took a little education on his part before he accepted he was doing it wrong.
That was on standard stuff, you can imagine what Abdul and Jose would do to an odd fire!
Look closely and compare with Tim's excellent pictures!
If I remember right, I got my drawing from the caves at an ancient early man site where the men were so primitive they hadn't learned to draw yet. They were trying to invent the Jeepster.
Thanks Tim.

Hi Tim,
If he doesn't have any burned coils I've got one at work that you are welcome to take pictures of. It's a Chevy coil unfortunately but It will show what happens when one leaves the ground out of the cap when installing a new coil. Contact me during the day at 503-657-6958 x2569 when you get back or e-mail me at nickmil@clackamas.cc.or.us if you need it.
Nickmil.
