Your ignition switch is gone. It needs replaced. Some times you can apply penetrating oil to your key, and insert it a couple times into the ignition to free up the tumbler. But this is a temporary fix. Best to go ahead and replace the tumbler all together. It's not that hard a job, but it does involve a lot of strange stuff that you only see during this job.....

You'll really want to fix it while you can. I kept mine for a few months (it was cool not needing my keys!) until I was 10 hours from home without my tools and the tumblers added a new trick. I couldn't turn it off! I had to hold the brake and then let out the clutch. As if that weren't good enough, I had to force it to turn the engine on.

I had to fix it with an adjustable wrench and a chiltons manual I bought at the local NAPA.

I ALWAYS carry my tools when I travel now.

Don't all jeeps work without a Key..

now I feel different.

Mine's never used a key.. but I suppose it was 12 years old when I bought it.

Even better idea then replacing the cylinder.. fab up a push button start.. Nothing looks cooler and has 0 change to your Jeep.

It also add's another 35 h/p.

In my YJ, I have to have the key in to turn it forward but then the key can be easily pulled out with no change to anything. "It's a Jeep thing..."

Add me to the list! My CJ is like Tim's. It is locked in the "off" position, but once the cylinder is unlocked I can pull the key out start, or shut off the ignition. But if I turn it to the "off" position again, I need the key to unlock it.

The locking action is not uncommon to either AMC or Dodge/Chrysler vehicles. I'd sure suggest that you replace the tumbler. When you start the Jeep you're actually moving the igniton switch which enables and disables circuits according to the need of RUN, START, OFF and AUX. If you disable the key-tumbler you are actually disabling the igniton switch and it's cababilities. By installing a seprate starter switch you won't be able to cut in and out ciruits unless you do so manually.... It's just something to think about...

I just thought that was one of those:
"Its a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" kinda things...
Looks like I should "fix" mine too....

CJ8er you have a tumbler problem as stated above and you should replace them before you get stranded.

As to Jeepin-Tim and Smokengun your operation is just as designed. The tumbler was made to be placed in the lock position to "keep others out" and then once the key is turned to off you can pull the key and still have use of the vehicle to turn off or on as needed yet you are still in control of the key. This was a common practice with most auto manufacturers Ford, Chrysler, Chevrolet, and AMC prior to the newer electronic keys used in the last several years.
