Default Do YJ\'s and XJ\'s use the same NP231??

i have an 89 YJ with a 2.5L and a NP231 tcase

i have a line on a NP231 from a 92 XJ with a 4.0L and an Auto

i am hearing mixed opinions on whether the XJ will have a 21 spine or a 23 spline tcase

anyone know??

thanks

i took an earlier xj(84) ax5 and np207 case and put them in my 2.5 yj. i was able to use my shaft from the yj, and it was the same spline count. the xj i used for parts, however, had the 2.5 in it. i think the np231 behind the 4banger had 21 spline, and the 6banger 231 case had the 23 spline.. anyone else know for sure...

My father replaced his xj t-case with an atlas II last year. He told me that they were the same but had different out put shafts (assuming 4.0L ). Thus you would need to change the shafts.

Any 231 that came behind an automatic will have the 23-spline shaft.
Any 231 that came behind an AX-15 (or newer) will have the 23 spline shaft.
Bummer for you You'll have to swap 'shafts.

For some reason it seems TJ 231s are longer than YJ 231s? At least they claim you get more extra driveshaft when doing a SYE on a Tj than Yj, whats up with that?
