Default HELP!--Running New Fuel Lines

I need a little help on running new fuel lines for my MPI install. I can bend hard line, but what I am concerned about is how to run them to avoid vapor lock. I guess my question should be what is the best way to run the new fuel lines. Everything is out, engine, tranny, xfer case, and gastank. Should I run all hardline, if so what type, or soft line, again what type. My Dad has his opinions about what to use, I just like having the benefit of others opinions as well. He thinks that we can get everything put back together in <font color=red>two weeks</font color=red> so I can give jeepchick's mazda323 back to her for the summer semsetsr when she will need it.[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif[/img]--Some how I doubt that we will be able to finish the Jeep in two weeks. I've got finals comming up in a week and a half.[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif[/img]

hard lines ... also 2 weeks man if you are like me it will never be done there is always something to do .. good luck

Robert87yj,

I did mine in one and a half days on a weekend. Even put in a wrangler 15 gallon tank w/a fuel pump in the tank instead of strapping the pump to the frame as they wanted the user to do. Unless yours is all muffed up I don't see two weeks. I didn't run new fuel lines, left them right in place, no problems since the install w/anything. I've done two of these installs, one in a 86 cj and one in a 87 wrangler, the cj was easier. Just my 2 cents. Later.

Nuke,
Why hard instead of soft. Would a soft line made for fuel injection work ok, or should I be concerned that the fuel lines might rupture? Would it just be easier to go with the hard lines than worry about the durability of the soft lines?

i used all hard lines because the durabilty factor they will not just hang down by accident and get ripped off when you are in the thick of things but if that happens with hard lines take some tube with you and some clamps presto fixed for the time being

i just ran a 3/8" rubber line from the tank to the throttle body and used the original 5/16" metal supply line for the return line. i'm not using the original 1/4" metal return line. the pro-jection is regulated at 13-14 psi, which a rubber line can handle fine.

I'd run as much hard as I could, then go to soft when I had to. It'll work out best in the long run, though it would be a lot easier to just run soft throughout the jeep, just won't last as long and as mentioned earlier, will be subject to rips and rubbing etc...

I did the MPI in an 86. I also took off the front clip and pulled the engine, tranny, and T-case at one time so I could put in a new tranny at the same time. I ran hard line up the passenger frame rail, across the backside of the front crossmember (the one under the radiator, and back down the drivers side frame rail. It is all tucked up and protected. I do have high pressure rubber fuel line connecting the hard line to the MPI lines.

jfralph,

What problems did you run into in when doing the install. My engine is just getting back together. The oil pan and timing chain cover went back on last night. Then today I discovered that I need a new harmonic balancer. I'm just getting everything laid out now because I'm missing the harmonic balancer.
Maybe we'll be able to get it all done in two weeks like my dad predicted.

Hey, I've got an 86 block in my 87. Did your original fuel line run under the rear main seal on the engine, around the oil pan. Mine was set up this way. It was one of the first things that we did to the jeep. Sorry, had to ask.

I ran new lines on mine, I used 4, eight foot 3/8 steel brake lines. Had to run double line for fuel return to tank. Fish them through the frame rail then ran rubber from steel to tank and steel to fuel pump.
