OT: Patriot Day

I put up our flag this mourning. F-16 Thunderbirds are flying over. Kinda chokes me up. I'll go to the airshow tomorrow.

Good for you! But how do you get an air show? Ours at Scott AFB was cancelled a couple for years ago for "budget and security" reasons.

Don't know. But I'd bet the city gov, local taxpayers aka: me payed a bunch. They have spent lots on things not as worthwhile.

Since there were no replies to this thread, I was not going to comment and just let it go. Since it got brought back to the top, I have to ask Ö

So how does any of this do anything to honor or even remember those who perished on that day or have anything to do with what happened that day? Sounds more like a day of celebration than one of remembrance.

BTW Ė I did find it most appropriate that morning was misspelled in the original post.

The connection is that the military, police and firefighters are all in the general business of protecting people from bad things and bad people. And that the military, police and firefighters all suffered casualties as a result of what happened back then; police and firefighters immediately, and military in the following years.

But my opinion is that these annual observations do more to encourage the enemy than cheer the citizens, military, police and firefighters. It lets the bad guys know that they really hurt us.

Maybe Iím just dense but I donít see the connection. I donít see how any of this honors or even recognizes those people much less the thousands of others that perished that day.

Here in KC, as well as other cities, there was a 9/11 memorial stair climb, that I understand.

I donít understand naming it Patriot Day. I donít know who were patriots and there were many foreigners who perished who were probably not patriots of this country.

I donít understand the flags on houses when the flags on poles are at half-staff, it just seems irreverent even though the government encourages the practice.

I couldnít watch an airshow without remembering the images of the plane slamming into the Trade Tower.

It all just seems like a glorification and worship of a dysfunctional government.

And, there were military casualties that day at least in the Pentagon.

Whether it does honor anyone or not, in your opinion or mine, is really beside the point. The people doing whatever they do believe that they are honoring someone by doing so, and so they are.
