Default 87 YJ stock emissions system

Hello all. I am a newbie to the Jeep community and I am quickly getting the "Jeep fever." I recently bought an 87 YJ with the 4.2 liter that I am preparing for the Virginia state inspection so I hope some of you can give me some advice and help finding parts. I plan on doing mostly street driving with some weekend camping trips and trips to the beach so not any heavy duty off roading. To pass the Virginia vehicle inspection, the emissions system has to be present, even though they do not actually do any emissions testing. A previous owner of my YJ removed the factory air cleaner so along with that, the EGR thermal vacuum switch was removed so now my EGR has no control switch. Also, I don't see an Evaporative Emissions Canister (charcoal fuel vapor canister) but I do see the vent hose from the gas tank is cut and hanging in the engine compartment. Where is that canister mounted if I have one? Do any of you have any emissions parts that you want to get rid of that will fit my Jeep? I am looking for the factory air cleaner housing, the EGR thermal vacuum switch, the Evap Emissions Canister and probably some other parts that I don't know that I need yet. Thanks in advance for helping a newbie!

Welcome to the board! There are a few YJ folks who check in from time to time. I would guess that they probably either need their emission stuff or pitched it long ago, but you may get lucky. I still have the air injection pump from my '78, but that's because I figured that it should be good for something some day.

Don't forget Ebay, there are some Air Cleaner housings listed right now. Or try junk yards! It's your best bet, but they're usually picked over. You've got to be there at the right time. You may get some of them from Collins Brothers in Texas.

Collins Brothers Jeeps and Jeep Parts

Prepare to empty your wallet.

Remember that many parts for Jeeps crossed over from the Jeep platform to the Gremlin and the Hornets, it's still AMC. If you haven't read this, it covers your '87 258 fuel system, do so:

Table of Contents

Rock Auto should have the EGR valve. The canister can be rebuilt and Rock Auto has the parts for it if you can find a canister in bad shape.

Best of luck hunting for parts.

Thanks for the reply and advice. I've been checking craigslist with no luck yet and will now check ebay and collins brothers.

I own a CJ and don’t know YJ. On my CJ, the evaporation canister was in the back of the left rear fender. The cut hose you see in the engine compartment may have been the fuel return hose. The fuel filter had 3 ports, inlet, outlet and fuel return. Many of those old filters got replaced or removed.

CJ7Taz, thanks for the reply. You are correct on both. I found my canister hidden under the washer reservoir exactly where you said. Now I just have to get some new vacuum hoses and hook it up. Also you are correct on the fuel hose. The stock fuel filter has been replaced so the previous owner cut the return hose and left it hanging just aft of the left headlight. Thanks again to you and all the others who have shared their knowledge.
