Default T150 Shifter

Hello,

I have decided to use my old T150 in my '68 CJ5 as it offers the shortest overall length of my options (I have two T18s and three SM420s, but all would be much longer).

The '68 has a Dauntless V6 and I can get the adapter for the bellhousing relatively cheap. I plan to swap the axles from my '79 CJ5 into it with the T150/D20. I don't plan to wheel it much, basically light weekend fun, ice cream getter sort of build. The CJ6 is going to be my trail rig.

My T150 is missing the shifter lever and retainer cap from the shift tower. It got lost somewhere over the last 15 years since it was removed. I can't find a replacement anywhere online. The closest I have found is the entire shift tower for $125. I don't need that and would rather not spend that much cash on a T150.

Does anybody know where I can get just the lever and retainer cap? Do any other transmission caps/levers fit the T150 that I might be able to use? I'm not averse to heavily welding/forging/grinding if need be.

Thanks all,
Fritz

Is the T150 setup similar to the T18?

The retainer cap shouldn't be much of a hill for a climber, but the lever is a different kettle of fish. It would have to be made of a good quality steel to withstand the flexing. You could turn one out of 4150 quarter hard, but if it includes a ball like the T18 shifter, just the piece of stock would probably be close to a hundred.

I thought that the T18 was available in the 5s when I got my 7 in '78. If so it should go into yours, and if the drive shaft were a little on the short side it wouldn't hurt on a mild Jeep.

Jim,

I haven't tried fitting them, but as I understand it, the T18 and T150 shifters are different. The T150 does have a ball on the shaft and since it is a wear surface, strength is a concern.

I have two T18s, but with the adapter to the D20, they are about 4 inches longer than a T150. In an 81 inch wheel base, that makes for a very short driveshaft. Not impossible, but pretty short. I'm also going for a stock feel for this little project.

What I would love to find is a T14/D18 that would fit in perfectly for very cheap. I want this little beast to be as lite as stock with some safety improvements. No lift, stock tires, etc.

Your idea intrigues me though. I'll have to see how far different the T18 is. If the cap fits, that is one easy step. If the shifter can be modified....

Dang, I had an extra t150 and it just kept getting in the way for like 2 years so I hauled it off with a load of scrap last summer. Everything on it worked except 2nd gear... I did keep the bell housing though..
