1989 YJ 258 Problem - Off-Road Forums & Discussion Groups

Awhile back, I was driving down the highway when shouted to me there was a problem with my 89 YJ. I pulled over to see the engine overheating. The thermostat stuck closed.

The engine runs fine with one exception. There appears to be no oil to the cylinder head. There is a very slight valve tap at idle which was never there before.

The oil pressure is now about 35-40 psi which is less than it was before but still not too low.

I changed the oil and even added a can of engine flush and let it run for awhile with no change.

I plan to drop the oil pan to check the sump screen just to make sure it isn't partially clogged.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Just a slight lifter tick? I can't say I can help you. It would seem to be a real oddity to have the oil not make it to the top end with that kinda pressure.

Are we sure the gauge is working properly?
