LEVE, I've never seen the Volkswagon semi-fore turns signals, but I've read about them, seen pictures of stop posts that had semi-fore arms instead of lights.
Was it something like those?

Yes, there were arms in the B-door pillar that were hooked up to solenoids. You'd hit the turn signal switch and that would engage the solenoid, the arm would come out from the pillar, the light would be enabled. It was pretty neat.

When I was a kid in the '50's most of the Semi's I saw had semaphore turn signals as well. I just went through some of my old family pictures and most of my father's semi's had them. It wasn't nation wide, but mostly in the western states. I don't recall seeing them when I'd go east. I'm wondering if they weren't a just little west coast trucker bling.

I don't remember ever seeing them on trucks in the midwest, so I would guess that they were a west coast thing. Might have been required by one of the states, so the truckers had them installed so that they could haul there without being hassled.

Which brings up an interesting question; can one be ticketed out of state for a vehicle that meets the home state regulations?

Yes... as example, studded tires. I run them from November to April. However if I go to Idaho I can be ticketed two weeks out of the year. Idaho and Washington differ one week when you can put them on, and when they have to be removed. I can also be ticketed for having them on in a state that outlaws them.

Most certainly can!

I got a ticket in Nevada for not having TWO mirrors on my motorcycle, event though it was a licensed Antique and only came from the factory with ONE mirror.
(The irony is, it was a 1941 Kentucky State Police Special and still had the state police logo and lights on it!)

Back when Indiana still had state inspections, and mine was current,
I got a ticket in Ohio for having WHITE front turn signal lenses when Ohio required 'Amber',
And it was a CJ! White lenses and bulbs in the front!

I got another ticket in Ohio for having the star on the door of an old police car I purchased at auction, and we were TOWING IT!.

Ohio makes them remove/cover up the ENTIRE star or emblem off the door, not just the word 'Police' or department logo...
(that won't happen again, They don't put 429 Super Cobra Jet engines in police cars anymore!)

I purchased an '86 Mustang in Fla. and brought it home to Indiana, and got a ticket for 'Obstruction Of Vision' for the FACTORY window tint on the side windows...

Back when EVERYONE ran studded tires in the winter around here, I got a ticket in Kentucky for studded snow tires, and I was only two miles inside the state line shopping!

I got a ticket 4 years ago out in Virginia for having the tires sticking out too far from under the fenders.
Same vehicle ran through several eastern states repeatedly without any issues, and was legal in it's licensed state.

Our guys got popped twice in two days in Las Vegas last year for not having reflective sticker tape on the back of the PRIVATE CARRIER car trailers...
Not that they didn't have reflectors back there,
But they didn't have the 'Correct' kind of tape on the back!

Not an issue with federal DOT, Indiana state law, but Las Vegas/Nevada has a REAL issue with it!

The list goes on, but what would be the point...

From the stories presented here, I think what you have on your vehicle doesn't really matter much; it's the attitude of the cop that day.

Dex, I don't know about the cobra mustangs but harleys arn't exempt from noise here in PA. We always ran a sheetmetal screw crossways in our drag pipes about 8 inch's from the end. The cops would say their straight pipes then stick the night stick up them, hit the screw and we'd say your hitting the baffles. (ha ha)
